Our Story

Dim sum or yum cha culture has been a part of the Melbourne food scene since the 1980s but unfortunately it's a dying trade.

We are dedicated to preserving and revitalising this rich heritage. Our mission is to keep the tradition alive by offering an extensive selection of freshly made dim sum, conveniently snap-frozen for you to enjoy in the comfort of your own home. We believe in preserving the essence of the time-honoured traditions and hoping that each bite transports you to the bustling streets of Hong Kong.

Demand for dim sum these days has grown to the point where businesses have machines pumping out dumplings by the thousands.

At Hong Kong Dim Sum (HKDS) we are all about bringing the authentic flavours of Cantonese cuisine and textures only achieved through experienced artisan hands to your plate; or bowl if you are a serious yum cha enthusiast.

Artisan handmade

For those that don't know the lingo, yum cha = drink tea or a better translation would be,

"lets have brunch,
with a Cantonese twist."

Our dim sum is a true labour of love, each dumpling meticulously handcrafted using age-old recipes that have travelled 7,416 kilometres across the seas—from the skilled hands of our founder, Kong Choi Leung.

Kong was part of the first wave of Honkie dim sum masters that was headhunted from the tea houses of Hong Kong to bring yum cha to Melbourne's Chinatown. With years of experience managing renown establishments like Janbo, Flower Drum, and Lucky Chan, Kong's expertise extended beyond the culinary realm as he delved into the live seafood and fresh greens trade.

Melbourne 1980s

During Kong's tenure running restaurants across Melbourne, he recognised a high demand for authentic bao and dumplings but a shortage of available dim sum chefs. To meet this need, he began offering packaged dim sum in addition to his restaurant's regular fare. Even after finishing his regular shift, Kong would continue working alongside his wife and children in the kitchen to prepare and package the dim sum for delivery to other restaurants in the area, showcasing his unwavering dedication to his craft.

In 2001, he proudly opened his first HKDS in Box Hill, Victoria. The continued success led to the opening of our third store in Glen Waverley, where you can still enjoy his dim sum today.
